Curtains can be an expensive investment, depending on where you buy them, but as a shopping writer, one place I always look to for affordable homeware is Dunelm. The high street shop has a habit of making items that, at times, can give more expensive brands a run for their money at a purse-friendly price. One pair of curtains that caught my eye on my most recent browse is the Modern Chinoiserie eyelet curtains – and even better, they're currently on sale with a massive 50% off.

For the uninitiated, Chinoiserie is a 17th- and 18th-century design style that originated in Europe but draws inspiration from the natural scenery and artistic history of East Asia. These white and blue curtains have a pattern depicting pagodas, majestic cranes and weeping willows trailing across them. And shoppers have said they are "well worth the money".

Previously priced at £50 for the W 168cm (66") x D 137cm (54") size, they are now available for just £25. The larger W 168cm (66") x D 228cm (90") option has also been discounted, down to £35 from £70.

But, as well as being stylish, they're all super practical – in particular, for bedrooms. They have a blackout lining to minimise sunlight, and, according to the brand, it also repels heat in the summer, helping keep rooms cool during hot weather, reports Manchester Evening News.

The curtains have so far received a customer satisfaction rating of 4.8 out of five. One shopper said: "Excellent quality and well worth the money. Curtains hang beautifully. Would buy again."

Another added: "I am pleased with my Chinoiserie curtains. I like the bold, Japanese-effect pattern, very different from the past curtains I have bought. These are my first eyelet curtains. Much easier to hang than the curtains with hooks and draw cords.

"It would have been helpful if the curtains had been available in a wider size, too. But the 72" drop was fine for my windows (dual aspect). I have two pairs of curtains at one window to make up for the fullness."

A third wrote: "Beautiful curtains, love them. I look at them every night, so beautiful and keep the light out too. Well made, very happy."

However, someone else said: "Love the design, but they were very badly creased, so I had to carefully iron them, and the hems weren't quite right, nor the area around the holes at the top.m and the hems weren't quite right, nor the area around the holes at the top. I would normally have taken them back, but I needed them in a hurry for the guest room."
